New York City's next chief executive, Zohran Mamdani, has confirmed to live in the iconic Gracie Mansion, departing from the rent-stabilised apartment that became a focal point throughout his campaign.

An Iconic Home

Constructed in 1799, Gracie Mansion has served as the mayoral home for the majority of New York City mayors after the post-war period.

Yet, Mamdani, for whom housing costs is a key issue, did not confirm he would live there immediately following his electoral win in November.

"The choice rested on our family's safety and the imperative to dedicating my full attention on carrying out the agenda for affordability the city's residents voted for," the Mayor-Elect declared on Monday.

A Fond Farewell

His home was in the Queens borough of Astoria, a district famous for its vibrant immigrant communities and international dining.

"To Astoria: many thanks for showing us the best of New York City," he expressed.

"Although my address will change in the neighborhood, Astoria will always live inside me and my efforts as mayor," he affirmed.

Campaign Controversy

In his campaign, Mamdani connected his central policy – to freeze the rent – to his own housing situation.

Yet his rivals, most notably ex-governor Andrew Cuomo, criticised Mamdani for living in the affordable housing although he came from a famous family.

Not All Mayors Stayed

Not every mayor have opted to reside at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the business magnate, preferred to remain in his own townhouse on Manhattan's Upper East Side for his time in office, which wrapped up in 2012.

Instead, Bloomberg argued it ought to be a space for civic gatherings, and advocated for an extensive renovation of the older mansion.

A Grand New Home

As he settles into Gracie Mansion sometime around his inauguration on 1 January, he will be surrounded by an environment very different than his modest Astoria home.

Featuring butter yellow paint, green shutters, and pristine railings, Gracie Mansion is a wedding cake of a house with views of the East River.

Within, the first floor of the classically designed mansion is decorated to reflect the home's early 19th-century origins.

The property, which reportedly has five bedrooms, also boasts fortified protections to secure the mayor and his family.

Supernatural Speculation

Past occupants have claimed that Gracie Mansion also has supernatural lodgers.

Chirlane McCray, the spouse of former mayor Bill De Blasio, informed the press that they experienced doors opening and closing inexplicably, and the floorboards made strange noises.

The departing mayor Eric Adams was more certain. "It doesn't matter the skeptics say," he declared in 2022. "There are ghosts in there, man."

The Value of Rent Stabilization

The apartment he is leaving is under rent control, which means the city sets limits on how much landlords can increase rent each year.

City residents view rent-stabilized housing as valuable lifelines as the housing expenses rises faster than the means of many residents.

Data indicated Mamdani paid about $2,300 each month for his apartment.

Based on data from real estate analysts Zillow, the typical monthly cost for a studio or one-bedroom in New York City is $3,500 a month.
