We are analyzing images and video shared earlier today that purport to show the aftermath of a reported car bomb blast that Russian officials state killed a senior soldier in Moscow.
Russian authorities stated that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was in the vehicle that exploded and that he succumbed to his wounds. A probe is under way.
The initial step to verify the site from which the pictures were from relied on posts indicating the explosion occurred on Yasenevaya Street in the southern part of the capital city of Russia.
We used street-view imagery on Google Maps and the local mapping service Yandex Maps to corroborate the distinctive yellow colour of a adjacent apartment building seen in the video.
Identifying other structures, streetlights and the street layout verified the exact location the footage were taken.
Additionally, we verified that the videos were recent and that the images had not undergone manipulated.
