Thomas Tuchel Desires Jude Bellingham's Fire Provided The Three Lions' Star Sets Aside Egotism at the Door.

A single omission proved sufficient. Another and it would have started to look vindictive from the England manager, who is far too wily not to understand that claiming the World Cup trophy is probably going to require help from Jude Bellingham, even if it is equally up to the player to fit into the game plans and squad hierarchies necessary with England now that he is back in Tuchel's warm embrace.

The manager wants Bellingham's edge, his intensity, but it is a matter of using it appropriately. Skill is important but the squad understand from past setbacks that there is consequences when stardom prevails. Still, a point has been made.

Bellingham had plenty to reflect on after being left out of the previous squad. He observed England secure their spot at the tournament without him. He watched Morgan Rogers excel as a counterpressing attacking midfielder. He listened as Tuchel mention valuing the team's dynamism and principles. Inevitably, Bellingham has reacted in winning fashion, scoring crucial goals for Real Madrid versus their rivals and Juventus. His selection was inevitable; a second snub would have left his World Cup hopes hanging by a thread.

The hope is that the manager will have a Bellingham focused on intimidating opponents rather than teammates. After all, from a tactical perspective, there is no advantage to creating tension with one of the best players in the world. The ideal scenario is that his period not playing has shown him that playing for one's country is a valuable, precarious thing. Tuchel, on his side, can now offer support around the youngster after showing that he is willing to drop big names.

“There is no problem regarding him, there is no problem with the character,” the German stated. “Bellingham possesses a competitive streak. You need a certain edge to achieve greatness that he reached. We all need to support him and build an environment which he can use that intensity towards opponents and for the objectives we are building as a team.”

Bellingham took up the spotlight at the team news conference for the upcoming dead-rubber qualifiers against one opponent and the other. Who else? Well, what about Phil Foden? Here is a further gifted No 10 who needs support and direction. Foden has been absent for the national team since March and has struggled to reach his best recently but the boss could not ignore the player after his display in Manchester City’s win against Borussia Dortmund recently.

The issue, though, is how to use the multiple playmakers at England’s disposal. Rogers and Eze have earned their places and there will be compelling reasons to include Cole Palmer once he is fit after a persistent groin problem. Would taking five No 10s to the World Cup be too many? Gareth Southgate never found the right blend at the European Championship. He compromised by forcing both stars into the starting lineup, restricting the captain's style in the process.

It seems unlikely Tuchel repeating that if it hurts the attacking balance. Space exists for one No 10, with fast wide players on the flanks. Clarity helps. Bellingham is selected as a central attacker. The new call-up, selected for the first time, is a No 8 and the recalled Wharton will battle another player as a No 6. Additionally, there is no wide role for the City star, who has to be central. The coach prefers him close to Kane. “It is illogical to ask Foden: ‘You are needed on the pitch but there’s no space in your preferred role, can you play the left side? Or the right wing?” he said. “Phil will play in the No 9-10ish position, in the middle of the pitch. I've long had this vision regarding him for a long time. In my view it fits his style best.”

Tuchel agreed there are times when the player has seemed out of sorts in an England shirt. “One senses almost like, ‘Does he like it?’ And a player like him who has this childish joy to play football, then clearly something is not right, whether it's his role, the setup, it's unclear.

“I think he is also accustomed to representing his club in a specific system, with a clear task. Believe he benefits greatly from clarity. What is my position? In which positions am I to receive the ball? Where am I supposed to accelerate the match? What are my to defensive duties?”

Tuchel discussed Bellingham bursting through for easy finishes and the other netting strikes from 18 yards. He added he has a extended list of 60 players. Morgan Gibbs-White, others, the goalkeeper and Ruben Loftus-Cheek have dropped out. A new face is recognized for his good displays for Manchester City at defense. Interest is high.

Leaving out of the striker means there is no like-for-like alternative for Kane in this squad. Interestingly, Tuchel hinted at deploying the playmaker as a false 9 against one opponent or Albania. Anthony Gordon, Marcus Rashford, Bellingham and Jarrod Bowen are alternatives should Kane be unavailable. Since the place is booked, this is a moment for testing tactics.

Meanwhile, it is also a chance to develop the understanding with his teammate going. It's surprising that one must look back to the latter assisting Kane to score in a friendly win versus Scotland in over a year ago to discover the sole instance in 35 games for England when the duo combined for a goal. The coach will know that the two stars only exchanged the ball a single time during the team's ties with Denmark and Slovenia at the European Championship. The connection is missing.

“At this point at some point it becomes the responsibility of the players,” he stated. He does not shy away to deliver home truths. Remains a sense of Bellingham under scrutiny. He may not be assured to start versus Serbia and Albania. The manager wants Bellingham onside but he will be monitoring him closely. Set aside the ego at the door. Doing so could turn a very strong squad into an more effective one.
