The Young Spinner Earns Surprise Selection in England's Test Series Squad
England have opted for a 12-man selection just 48 hours ahead of the opening Test match, with Shoaib Bashir securing a unexpected spot.
The 22-year-old’s selection suggests that the tourists will wait until the morning of the first Test to determine whether the venue conditions suit four seamers or the addition of a spin bowler.
Jofra Archer and Mark Wood are included in the 12-man squad, indicating there are no doubts about either pace bowler’s fitness.
Gus Atkinson and Brydon Carse round out the bowling group, with Carse most likely to be omitted if Bashir enters the starting XI.
Pitch Factors Lean Toward Seamers
The England coach had been expected to opt for an all-seam attack on a venue that has staged several past matches.
During these games, the majority of dismissals have fallen to seamers, with only 40 to spin bowling.
Among these spin dismissals, the veteran spinner has taken the bulk, while overseas slow bowlers combined have just a handful.
On a ground known for its pace and bounce, and whose groundsman, Isaac McDonald, stated that these characteristics are “a mainstay and not going to change,” a team relying on seamers is still the probable decision.
Spin Options Considered
Previously there was rumors that Will Jacks could be brought into the team to provide some slow bowling while additionally strengthening the batting lineup.
But McCullum has chosen to stick with the young spinner, having stated previously that he would be his first-choice spinner for the Ashes.
Earlier, Nathan Lyon commented on the English spinner as “decent,” saying that “in my eyes, Jack Leach is still England’s top slow bowler.”
“It is a massive role, and it can be a significant test for bowlers who lack experience in the past in Australian pitches,” he remarked of slow bowling in matches Down Under.
“I won't let my secrets out so they perform and excel out here.”
