The State of Texas Attorney General Sues Acetaminophen Producers Over Autism Claims

Judicial Case
Ken Paxton, a Trump ally campaigning for US Senate, alleged the drug companies of concealing safety concerns of Tylenol

The top legal official in Texas Paxton is taking legal action against the manufacturers of acetaminophen, alleging the corporations hid safety concerns that the pain reliever posed to pediatric neurological development.

The lawsuit arrives thirty days after Former President Trump publicized an unproven link between using acetaminophen - referred to as paracetamol - while pregnant and autism in offspring.

Paxton is taking legal action against J&J, which once produced the medication, the sole analgesic recommended for pregnant women, and Kenvue, which presently makes it.

In a official comment, he said they "deceived the public by making money from pain and promoting medication ignoring the potential hazards."

Kenvue says there is lacking scientific proof connecting Tylenol to autism spectrum disorder.

"These manufacturers deceived for years, intentionally threatening numerous people to line their pockets," Paxton, from the Republican party, said.

Kenvue stated officially that it was "deeply concerned by the dissemination of inaccurate information on the reliability of paracetamol and the likely effects that could have on the well-being of US mothers and children."

On its online platform, Kenvue also stated it had "regularly reviewed the relevant science and there is insufficient valid information that shows a proven link between taking paracetamol and autism."

Organizations acting on behalf of medical professionals and health professionals concur.

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists has stated paracetamol - the primary component in acetaminophen - is a restricted selection for expectant mothers to manage discomfort and elevated temperature, which can create major wellness concerns if ignored.

"In more than two decades of research on the consumption of paracetamol in gestation, no reliable research has conclusively proven that the consumption of paracetamol in any trimester of pregnancy causes neurodevelopmental disorders in children," the association said.

The court filing cites latest statements from the former administration in asserting the drug is reportedly hazardous.

Last month, the former president caused concern from public health officials when he advised women during pregnancy to "struggle intensely" not to use Tylenol when sick.

The US Food and Drug Administration then released a statement that medical professionals should contemplate reducing the use of acetaminophen, while also stating that "a causal relationship" between the drug and autism in children has remains unverified.

Health Secretary RFK Jr, who oversees the Food and Drug Administration, had vowed in April to initiate "comprehensive study program" that would determine the source of autism spectrum disorder in a limited time.

But specialists advised that identifying a unique factor of autism - believed by scientists to be the result of a complicated interplay of genetic and environmental factors - would prove challenging.

Autism is a type of lifelong neurodivergence and disability that influences how persons perceive and engage with the environment, and is diagnosed using medical professional evaluations.

In his legal document, the attorney general - aligned with the former president who is seeking the Senate - claims the manufacturer and J&J "deliberately disregarded and attempted to silence the research" around acetaminophen and autism.

The lawsuit seeks to make the firms "destroy any marketing or advertising" that asserts Tylenol is secure for expectant mothers.

The Texas lawsuit echoes the complaints of a collection of parents of minors with autism and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder who took legal action against the producers of Tylenol in two years ago.

The court dismissed the case, declaring studies from the parents' expert witnesses was inconclusive.
