The Former President's Progressive Warning Misses Europe's Real Threat: Technological Stagnation.

Donald Trump's national security strategy offers a misguided view of the European Union. It claims that open-border policies and what it terms "progressive" agendas represent an grave risk to European civilization. However, this argument rests on a serious misreading of the situation. The actual danger facing the EU is not cultural but technological and economic backwardness.

The Stark Economic Divide Separating the US and Europe

The data reveal a sobering contrast. Between 2008 and 2023, American economic output surged by 87%, compared to a mere 13.5% increase for the European Union. Over this period, EU GDP per capita fell from 76.5% to just 50% of the American figure. Remarkably, even Mississippi now boasts a greater average income than several leading European economies like Italy and France.

Today, about half of the global 50 largest technology firms are US-based, while a mere four are from Europe.

The Technological Deficit: A Critical Problem

This widening disparity stems from superior productivity growth in the United States, largely due to technological innovation and higher total factor productivity. The landscape of world technology dominance is overwhelmingly US-centric. Over the past five decades, hundreds of American startups have grown into enterprises valued at more than $10bn, compared with just 14 in the European continent.

This gap raises a vital issue: As the competition for tomorrow's sectors like AI, semiconductors, and fusion energy, where does the EU positioned? Experts widely concede it is essentially a two-horse race between the United States and China, with European nations starting at a significant disadvantage.

Underlying Factors of the Continent's Technological Lag

Several major factors account for this technological divide.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The US boasts a far deeper and more dynamic network for funding startups. Europe still lacks a true unified investment market, a factor that limits the growth potential of new firms.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Excessive and fragmented rules hinder European business. A US startup can launch a service under a single regulatory framework to access a market of hundreds of millions. The European Union, despite a bigger population, is divided among twenty-seven separate systems, creating significant internal barriers.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Views on entrepreneurial failure differ sharply. In parts of Europe, a startup's collapse was historically viewed with penalties, whereas in the US, it is often seen as a valuable lesson.
  • Defense Spending: The United States enjoys a tightly woven innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. The continent's chronic underinvestment in defense has eroded its ability in breakthrough innovation.

A Path Forward: Grounds for Hopefulness

Despite these challenges, there are causes for hope. Policymakers are increasingly aware of the existential challenge and have started to advance substantial change. Key reports on European competitiveness and the single market point to the need for sweeping changes.

With the right policies and rule changes, Europe's strengths might enable much higher levels of commercial innovation.

The continent still possesses significant advantages: skilled workforce, excellent schools and universities, and premier research institutions. Coupled with a large internal market and substantial household savings, these foundations could trigger a new wave of venture creation.

Importantly, even if the EU does not become the leader in creating next-generation technologies, it can still dramatically increase productivity by implementing and tailoring innovations from other regions.

An Inflection Point

The European Union now faces a decisive crossroads. To paraphrase a famous line, economic erosion often happens "gradually and then suddenly". To date, Europe's technological decline has been gradual. However, without bold steps to tackle its deep-seated problems, today's slow erosion could turn into a sudden and irreversible decline in world influence.
