The Details Known Concerning the Victims of the Bondi Beach Terror Attack

A minimum of 16 lives were killed and over 40 were hurt when attackers shot at a Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach, an attack local authorities have called a act of terrorism.

According to the most recent information, officials have announced the death toll remains at 16, including one of the alleged attackers. Moreover, 42 people with injuries were transported to the hospital.

The deceased have not yet been formally identified, but police believe their ages range from 10 and 87 years old.

Listed are the victims who have been identified to date.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.

Known as a father-of-five, he worked as the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and acquaintances spoke of him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.

“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a relative said.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their youngest child in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, as stated by his wife.

She described the moments leading up to the shooting, saying they had been standing together when the gunfire began. “He moved to protect me because he wanted to stay near me,” she said.

The husband and wife were both Holocaust survivors, having experienced unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had subsequently immigrated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

The French authorities have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is a casualty.

Officially, the Foreign Minister said that France mourned with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This despicable act is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must combat,” the message continued.

One Child

A young girl, aged 10 who was rushed to the Sydney Children’s Hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, police have confirmed.

One Israeli Citizen

One victim from Israel was also killed during the attack, according to multiple sources citing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

From the 42 people transported to hospitals, many are still under care, with five in serious condition. The injured include two officers who attended the scene.

One of the injured is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the attackers. Hailed as a hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. It has been reported he was injured and is receiving treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he recounted the incident as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also praised the actions of those who came to assist. He said he believed it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the shooting. He described he heard “a large number” of gunshots.

“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I sustained a gunshot wound. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
