The Contents of that Briefcase Henry Unlocks in Stranger Things?
During the bulk of the fifth and final season of the popular Netflix show, Holly Wheeler and Max are held captive within a psychic prison built from the memories of Henry Creel. The search for freedom in episode 6 leads them to experience a life-altering moment from Henry's early years—an event that may just hold the key to defeating him permanently.

Unearthing the Secrets of the Tunnel
Upon meeting Max in the psychic realm known as Camazotz, it becomes clear she is sheltering in a grotto that Henry avoids at all costs. An accidental discovery a telescope taken from Henry's old home allows Holly to realize that the danger lies beyond the cave. When she lines up her view to the cut-out, she and Max suddenly fall into a deep mine shaft.
There, they witness a Henry as a boy encounter an wounded, fearful individual. When Henry tries to help, the man reacts violently, hitting him in the hand. In a desperate act of self-defense, Henry strikes the man down with a rock. "Is this what corrupted him?" Holly questions through tears. The answer is affirmative, but the act involved more than a defensive killing.

A Naval Mystery and Stolen Research
The play reveals the infamous Philadelphia Experiment, which transported a vessel into a realm dubbed the Abyss. It faced creatures, and the lone returnee was the ship's commander, who emerged in a catatonic condition with an altered blood type.
That survivor's offspring, Martin Brenner, wanted to repeat this dimensional breach in the Nevada desert. However, a treacherous employee took experimental components to sell to the Communist spies, who were eager to begin their parallel research. This spy in the cavern is that employee.
Unlocking the Mystery
Considering what is known about his research, the briefcase would assuredly have samples of the unique blood type. As shown, Henry is already bleeding. He likely becomes contaminated upon contact with the blood, leading to the awakening of his powers—powers he would inadvertently transfer to the kids in Hawkins Lab.
Another possibility, the container could have held strange particles that later made its way to Hawkins Laboratory, where it acts to anchor the Upside Down. The prequel shows that Henry somehow wound up in the Abyss, returning after half a day fundamentally changed. As a youth, he fights the control of a malevolent force, reminiscent of how Will was controlled by the Mind Flayer in season 2.
A Weaponized Emotion
Henry's enduring terror linked to that memory highlights how profoundly traumatic the incident was for him. Even as he controls the Hive Mind and seeks to merge the Abyss into Hawkins, a piece of the scared boy remains. The villain weaponizes terror, and the show is setting up a showdown between him and Will, who has confronted his greatest terrors to gain strength.
His confrontation has effectively disarmed Vecna. Furthermore, Will now is aware of what his enemy truly fears, potentially giving him a key upper hand in the ultimate battle to come.
