Prime Small Screen Selections: 7 Must-Watch Movies This Coming Week

Highlighted Choice

The Substance

Coralie Fargeat's bold critique tackles the tyranny of women's appearance and the feared consequences of ageing. The veteran actress delivers an inspired performance in the role of Elisabeth, a 50-year-old film star reduced to starring in a workout series on the small screen. Forced aside thanks to her unscrupulous employer Harvey, played by Dennis Quaid, she seeks out a mysterious and horrifying treatment known as "The Substance". This generates a younger clone called Sue, leading to a progressively vampiric relationship between the two. This Friday, the streaming service Paramount+

The Woman in Cabin 10

This Agatha Christie-esque story features the talented actress playing Laura, a skilled journalist who opts for a hiatus from writing about world issues to board an opulent ship alongside a terminally ill Norwegian shipping heiress and philanthropist, her spouse, as well as other extremely wealthy individuals. But after an enigmatic female goes overboard overnight and everyone insists she wasn't real, Laura's investigative instincts awaken. Streaming currently, Netflix

This Supernatural Story

Steven Soderbergh tests his directorial skills in this nifty ghostly tale shot entirely through the eyes of the phantom. When a household including mother Rebekah and troubled teenage daughter Chloe occupies their new suburban house, the lens – representing the ghost – tracks their movements. Chloe seems aware of the poltergeist, and the entity appears defensive toward her. But why? The premise is enjoyable that doesn't outstay its welcome, featuring a surprise you might not see coming. Saturday 11 October, 4.35pm, 10.10pm, the Sky channel

This Self-Referential Film

Nicolas Cage embraces his unique fame via this autobiographical spoof. He plays a self-obsessed film star called Nicolas Cage who takes on a million-dollar gig to visit a festive event in Mallorca for the rich Javi, played by Pedro Pascal. Contacted by government spies to spy on the potential kingpin, his unique performing skills is put to the test. October 11th, 9pm, Channel 4

This Creepy Thriller

Derrickson's claustrophobic thriller holds up well even without a sequel. Taking place in 1978 Denver, a series of disappearances has made the local kids anxious. When Finney is taken by the kidnapper and locked up in a dungeon, he fears the worst. However, the non-functional line on the wall continues to ring, with eerie communicators offering help, as the prophetic visions of his sister Gwen may be his salvation. A solid creepfest. October 11th, nighttime, the Film4 channel

The Eyes of Tammy Faye

In the conflict between God and Mammon, it's a knockout win for Mammon in Michael Showalter's brilliantly over-the-top true story of the disgraced TV preacher and her criminal husband. Garfield plays the venal Jim, who proclaims early on, “God does not want us to be poor,”. Both individuals set about capitalizing on the people's spiritual convictions. It's an extravaganza of poor styling, excessive cosmetics and hypocrisy, yet the lead actress manages to depict Tammy Faye as a sympathetic figure. Tuesday 14 October, late night, the Film4 channel

This Espionage Thriller

The current week's second offering from Steven Soderbergh is a espionage tale as tight similar to the collars worn by the actor's British agent. He is tasked to identify a mole inside the organization out of five possibilities – one of whom is Kathryn, played by Cate Blanchett. Each performer are experts of deadpan cool, resulting in an engaging mental battle of fact versus fiction takes place. Additional actors join in the intelligent intelligence fun. Friday 17 October, 8.05am, 12.55pm, 8pm, Sky Cinema Premiere
