Patrick Bamford Joins the Blades After Leading Derogatory Songs Targeting Manager Wilder
Patrick Bamford has signed with the Championship side only half a year following leading insulting songs targeting the team's coach, Chris Wilder.
The 32-year-old striker, a free agent after departing from Leeds United, has agreed to a deal with the Championship club in difficulty through the winter. Bamford's lengthy time at Elland Road was ended by mutual consent this past summer.
One of the player's last memorable actions as a Leeds player included starting offensive songs about Wilder during Leeds' success festivities in April. Now, the one-cap England international will feature under Wilder as the Blades’ manager aims to lift his beloved club away from the relegation zone.
Previous Conflict Between the Striker and the Manager
The pair had history before Leeds won promotion back to the top flight last season while Sheffield United were defeated in the promotion decider by Sunderland. Wilder described Bamford as a "muppet" back when the roles were reversed during the 2018-19 season and the Blades secured direct promotion whereas Leeds United fell short in the promotion playoffs.
Making Amends and Moving Forward
Everything appears to have been resolved with Sheffield United, the league's least productive attack, urgently requiring of improvement up front while Bamford aiming to revive his playing days.
The song about Wilder gained traction this spring. A repentant Patrick along with Leeds boss, Daniel Farke, phoned the Sheffield United manager the following day.
Chris Wilder commented at the time: “Spoke with Patrick recently and I have no problem at all with it. I’m not sure about the words used from a fellow pro! However I valued and respected him giving me a call.
“We spent a short while and similarly I spoke to Daniel too and had a longer discussion together and he is a great person, a top guy. Back in my playing days we would give it and accept it and that is part and parcel of the game at every level, even on a Sunday morning. I've got absolutely no issue. I am cool with it and I said that to Pat.”
Recent Career Challenges
The forward made 18 appearances with Leeds United last season but the former Nottingham Forest, Chelsea & Boro player has struggled with injury over the past few seasons.
