No fewer than 13 passengers killed and 98 hurt in train crash in the nation of Mexico.

A fatal train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the speed and handling of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.

The disaster occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a route built to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.

“We shall meticulously determine what caused this accident,” stated the country's president.

The official reported that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The president noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those involved.

Major Initiative of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the former leader, whose presidency finished the year before. This project was closely associated with his administration's economic agenda for the southern region.

Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to stimulate the economy of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Building Management and Safety Concerns

The construction of both rail lines was supervised by the army, marking a dramatic growth of its role in public projects. They were built at an accelerated pace, beating forecasts to be at least partly opened before the end of that administration.

However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously sparked persistent questions over operational security.

  • Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This includes an prior crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had several non-deadly derailments.

Calls for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the chief of a key rival party urged an urgent pause in the development and management of all similar projects.

This stoppage was suggested while awaiting a thorough safety audit. The party stated that the loss of life "calls for immediate answers."

In reply, the national leader insisted that the train had been operating in complete adherence to all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the development and management of these vital projects.
