From The Last of Us Co-Director Comes a New Game That Looks Very Different But Builds On The Same Ideas.
A key creative force responsible for the iconic survival game is crafting a new venture into game development. His new project, called Coven of the Chicken Foot, signifies the inaugural effort for his development house, Wildflower Interactive, and it draws heavily from his past achievements prioritizing characters that learn and adapt.
An Unlikely Duo Embarks on a Unique Journey
Unveiled during a recent industry showcase, Coven of the Chicken Foot functions as a narrative-driven exploration title. Players control Gertie, a character who subverts typical power fantasies. This central concept stemmed from a desire to deconstruct what it means to be a protagonist.
"Imagine if you were without the sword or shield? What if your character was not built for battle? What if you’re a little old lady?" posed the creative lead. "I thought it was incredibly compelling to question the definition of a protagonist. A hero is about persevering against problems, including traits like sacrifice, loyalty, determination, and persistence."
A Living, Learning Partner Inspired by Past Work
Even though the title looks different visually, its groundbreaking system evolves from of the work seen in The Last of Us. The game's conception was inspired by a central inquiry: "What if I could make an AI partner even more reactive and adaptive to the player?"
The mysterious beast in the game transcends typical AI behavior. It is essentially a curious child which observes and responds with evolving behaviors. Initially, it explores with wonder, which can cause playful hijinks. Next, it moves into a mimicry phase. In the end, it watches and learns comprehending the world's rules.
- As an instance: Should the beast observe the witch solving a puzzle, it understands the action absent the context.
- This leads it to start picking up various things and try slotting them, repeating what it saw.
- The 'why' is learned when it stumbles upon solving a puzzle itself, creating a genuine learning moment.
A Personal, Player-Driven Narrative
Such advanced AI is designed to create individualized narrative moments. Straley stresses that Coven of the Chicken Foot will be a slower-paced, exploration-driven experience instead of a traditionally structured narrative.
"Whenever I attempted more hardcore story beats for this project, the dynamic felt wrong," Straley explained. "The core appeal of this relationship stems from how you as a player are going to have personal anecdotes and outcomes unlike anyone else's."
By prioritizing player-defined experiences, the new title represents simultaneously a refinement and a significant shift from Straley's well-known franchises. The project is currently in development for computer systems.
