US air traffic controllers are increasingly seeking second jobs and calling in sick, as they remain on duty without pay during the federal closure, the transport chief has stated.

"The controllers are becoming strained," the official told Fox News on Sunday, as some flights were halted on the California shoreline due to staffing shortages.

Following the government shut down on October 1st, air traffic controllers, who are considered critical staff, were told to continue performing their duties uncompensated.

But a number have been absent, causing terminals to stop or slow their flight operations, which has exacerbated setbacks caused by weather and other issues.

More than 3,000 US flights were delayed on the weekend, and the secretary stated he anticipates the situation to deteriorate further.

"I observe the stress," Duffy remarked in an interview on Sunday Morning Futures, adding that he had met with multiple professionals to listen to their concerns directly.

"They're taking side jobs, they're out there searching, 'Should I drive Uber, can I find an alternative of income to make ends meet?'" he continued.

Duffy added that on Saturday 22 alerts at airfields said travel would be delayed due to a shortage of employees - one of the highest since the closure began.

The US government shutdown reached its twenty-sixth day on the weekend, making it the second-longest halt in history.

Duffy has consistently cautioned that aviation regulators would slow down the number of planes in the air if there is a deficit of safety personnel.

In his interview, he declined to respond directly when questioned if it was secure to fly in the United States, and instead issued a personal plea to the professionals.

"I require my staff concentrating on the airspace, not on the monetary matters at home," the official stated.

On Sunday, certain flights were stopped at Los Angeles International Airport due to employee deficits, leading to disruption at the fifth-busiest airport in the country and one of the busiest in the globe, as well as additional travel extending north to the metropolis of Oakland, California.
