England to Begin Euro 2028 Campaign at City’s Home Ground
The English squad will commence their Euro 2028 journey at the Manchester City’s stadium, assuming they achieve the expected qualification for a competition hosted across the majority of the UK and the Ireland.
The Etihad Stadium has not welcomed an Three Lions match since eight years ago, when the Turkish team were overcome 2-1 in a friendly, but is highly likely to welcome the England side for their first match on June 10, 2028.
The English side are scheduled to play their concluding group fixtures at Wembley Stadium, but, if they top Group B, their last-16 tie would be held at Newcastle’s St James’ Park. Placing second would mean commencing the knockouts at Everton’s ground.
Tournament Launch and Protest
The event was inaugurated at an ceremony in Piccadilly Circus on Wednesday night. Senior figures from the tournament organizers and the host FAs were heckled as they approached the site by around fifty protesters, who demanded Israel’s national side to be removed from global football because of the situation in Gaza.
Signs were held up with phrases reading “Show Israel the red card” and “You are complicit”, while protesters shouted: “Kick Israel out.”
Event Timeline
The opening game of Euro 2028 will be held at the the national stadium of Wales in the Welsh capital, on a Friday in June 2028, a game that will involve the Welsh team if they make it.
Wembley will host the two semi-final matches and the championship match, which will be played on July 9, 2028 with a kick-off time at 5pm.
It is anticipated that an earlier start, which will also be implemented for Champions League finals from the upcoming season, will attract households and help engage a wider spectrum of audiences.
Qualifying Teams
The Ireland are due to play their first game at the Aviva Stadium and the Scottish team would follow suit at Hampden Park.
All four host countries’ teams will take part in the preliminary stage; two guaranteed slots will be set aside for any that miss out on the finals through the qualification path.
Locations and Elimination Phase
Villa Park and Spurs’ ground finalize the event’s nine venues. All will hold at least one elimination game, with the quarter-finals staged at each country’s national stadium.
The qualification draw will be held in Belfast, which was removed as a tournament location last year when it emerged the Belfast stadium could not be renovated in time, on December 6, 2026.
Tournament Vision
“It will be a competition for the fans and a showcase of everything we love about the game – its passion and capacity to bring people together.”
In excess of three million admissions, a all-time high for a men’s European Championship, are projected to be released to attendees.
