Chicago White Sox Secure Japanese Slugger Munetaka Murakami on a Major Multi-Million Dollar Deal.

In a significant move for their rebuilding roster, the South Side team have signed infielder Munetaka Murakami, completing a two-year contract bringing in the power-hitting player.

Financial Terms and Player Perks

The deal features a substantial signing bonus, issued within 30 days, in addition to compensation of $16 million for the 2026 season and seventeen million for the 2027 year.

Importantly, Murakami's 2027 salary may grow based on accolade achievements in 2026:

  • An additional $1M for earning the Most Valuable Player award.
  • $500K for finishing as runner-up or in third place in MVP voting.
  • $250,000 for placing fourth through 10th.
  • An identical bonus for earning the Rookie of the Year honor.

The contract also stipulates that he will not be optioned to the minors without his permission and makes him a free agent at the end of the term. Additional perks include a team-provided interpreter and airfare between the U.S. and Japan.

Posting Fee and Historical Context

As part of the transaction, Chicago must pay a posting fee of $6,575,000 to the Yakult Swallows, Murakami's former team in Japan's professional league. The Yakult organization would also receive a 15% cut of 15% triggered incentive payments.

Murakami will become the fourth Japanese to suit up for the White Sox, joining pitcher Shingo Takatsu (2004-05), infielder Tadahito Iguchi (2005-07), and outfielder Kosuke Fukudome (2012). Interestingly, Takatsu was a manager for Murakami while both were in Japan.

Player Profile

Murakami, a lefty bat who turns 26 soon, enters a promising group of offensive players in Chicago that includes prospects like Colson Montgomery, Kyle Teel, and Chase Meidroth. The White Sox are finished with a last-place season, placing at the bottom in the AL Central but showing a 19-game improvement from the year before campaign.

The winner of back-to-back league MVP honors in consecutive seasons, Murakami is famous for a historic 2022 season where he belted 56 homers, breaking the longstanding record for a NPB hitter formerly held by legend Sadaharu Oh. That performance also made him the most youthful hitter ever to achieve Japan's elusive batting Triple Crown.

His last year was shortened to 56 games due to an muscle issue. Despite fanning 64 Ks, he still managed .273 with 22 HRs and 47 driven in.

Over his career tenure with the Swallows, Murakami has posted a .270 career batting average with 246 HRs, 647 runs batted in, and nearly 1,000 strikeouts in 892 games. He started playing mostly at first base, he has more recently played to third base.

International Pedigree

Murakami's clutch hitting were on full display during the last World Baseball Classic. In the semi-final against Mexico, he drove in a victory-sealing double that drove in two fellow Japanese stars for a come-from-behind 6-5 win. The next night in the final against the United States, he slugged a tying shot in the second inning, paving the way for Japan's 3-2 title triumph.

The power hitter is scheduled to be officially presented at a press conference on Monday.
