Aaron Rai Clinches Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship in Thrilling Play-Off Showdown Versus Fellow Englishman Fleetwood
The 30-year-old golfer demonstrated remarkable nerve to secure the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship on Sunday, defeating Tommy Fleetwood in a tense play-off following a topsy-turvy final round of play.
Rai sank a decisive birdie putt from around eight foot to seal the victory, repeating his sole prior Rolex Series triumph at the Scottish Open in 2020, which was also a playoff win over the same opponent.
Sunday's Play Drama
Rai started the final round with a single stroke advantage over countryman Tommy Fleetwood and Danish golfer Højgaard. He finished with a total score of twenty-under after a topsy-turvy, 67 closing round that featured seven birdie putts and a pair of bogeys.
The challenger edged a stroke ahead with two holes to play after a birdie on the sixteenth, but Rai pulled level again on the seventeenth and then missed a 10-foot birdie putt to win outright on the final green.
Play-Off Decider
This led to a playoff at Yas Links where Rai prevailed to claim the championship and $1.5 million (£1.13 million) in prize money.

Notable Contenders
The Northern Irish star found himself a bit too far to do, finishing a stroke behind in a tie for third with Højgaard, after a spectacular 10-under final round of 62. It was his lowest-ever round on the European Tour, including eight birdie putts and one eagle.
The Danish golfer fired six birdies of his own, but his hopes of leading the leaderboard were hit by a dropped shot on the 12th. England’s Mansell hit an superb final-round 63 to end up tied for fifth with Australian Hillier.
