2K Hires Popular Battle Royale Lead to Revitalize Struggling Hero Shooter Project Ethos

The renowned publisher has appointed a seasoned producer from the creators of Apex Legends to lead the development team at 31st Union, which is currently crafting the upcoming third-person roguelike extraction-shooter known as this innovative game.

Management Shift Follows Poor Response

Brinkman takes on the role of studio head at 31st Union following the departure of former leader Michael Condrey, who was removed from his post due to Project Ethos' disappointing initial reveal last autumn.

On Wednesday, the company's top executive David Ismailer updated employees about this decision through an internal memo, which emphasized that early feedback sessions had shown the requirement for a more defined game identity.

Ismailer noted that the team is now refining the project with a refreshed vision, aiming to address community desires.

Trend of Strategic Acquisitions

The news echoes a similar move taken by the publisher in August, when they recruited an industry veteran from Blizzard to assist with the beloved franchise development group.

Here is the complete content from the president's announcement:

Team—

I understand you all just wrapped up your town hall - I trust you’re as enthusiastic as I am with the positive developments. Last time I shared you all a update, I stated the following: “I believe in this group. You all are some of the most motivated and talented creators we have had the opportunity to collaborate with - and we’re eager for that relationship to endure.”

Given your hard work and flexibility, especially over the last year, you repeatedly show that.

The player input from last fall’s the game playtest was informative. It affirmed the promise of a roguelike shooter but indicated we still had improvements to make. It uncovered the necessity for a sharper brand.

It has been motivating to see how far you’ve progressed. You embraced the criticism to heart and reimagined the title with a revitalized vision - one that’s poised to deliver on its ambition to our fans.

The belief in Project ETHOS strengthens every day. To further the remarkable development you’ve made, I’m excited to welcome Ben Brinkman as the incoming Director of the team. After a period of conversations, he comes aboard us on Monday, October 20.

His leadership and expertise in the competitive gaming genre is extensive, having devoted the last 15 years producing and managing some of the most well-known series in the industry, for example the acclaimed shooter, and most recently, the battle royale hit.

Let’s together in greeting Ben next week. We are all excited to keep witnessing the progress of Project ETHOS in the time to follow.

The President

Background of the Incoming Leader

The appointee currently holds the role of senior developer and production lead at Respawn Entertainment for Apex Legends. Brinkman previously was employed at Treyarch and Activision in diverse development positions on the Call of Duty series, and, before that, had periods at other industry leaders.

Game Details and Vision

The upcoming game was unveiled in last year together with a early access event. At the time, the developers portrayed the title as a "no-cost, 3rd-person roguelike hero shooter and an exciting evolution on the style."

"Create your ideal gameplay session—or face defeat—in this engaging over-the-shoulder adventure! Customize your character in real-time to suit your personal playstyle," the official summary explains. "Face the competition with new abilities, challenges, and obstacles that shift every session. Do you leave securely with your collected items? Alternatively take a risk, put it on the line, and trust your group can earn top ranking? The decision is up to you."

The game does not have an official release date or consoles, but fans can expect more updates as development progresses.
